This December we studied Antarctica and the Arctic together as a month long unit. It tied in great with Christmas time. We had alot of fun making winter crafts that you can also take a look at under related posts.
Videos/Movies: You can do a general search on Netflix using keywords like “Antarctica”, “Arctic”, “Polar Bears”, or “Penguins”. You’ll get more results than you know what to do with. These were some of our favorites.
- March of the Penguins- This documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman was absolutely captivating
- Untamed Antarctic- from the makers of “March of the Penguins” this documentary has 4 parts.
- Pingu: South Pole Adventures- for the little guy
Family Movie Night:
- Big Miracle- This is a great movie!!
Nat Geo Kids:

Books to Read:
- “If you were a Penguin” by Wendell Minor
- “Polar Lands” by Margaret Hynes
- “Draw, Write, Now: Polar Regions” by Marie Hablitzel
- “Kayuktuk: An Arctic Quest” by Brian Heinz - Young Aknik must prove to his tribe that he can hunt before he is accepted as a man.
In our Reading we have also been working our way through “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard Atwater. All of the funny antics the penguins pull in this book are really hilarious. We really tried to pull the Polar theme through as many subjects as we could this month. It was totally worth it.
Here’s a Wild Kratts Episode on Polar Bears.
